Wreaths Across America announces 2026 Theme: Remember Me
Wreaths Across America (WAA), the national nonprofit with a yearlong mission dedicated to remembering the fallen, honoring those who serve, and teaching children the value of freedom, announces “Remember Me” as its official theme for 2026.
The theme comes as the nation approaches the 250th anniversary of the United States, a milestone WAA says calls for renewed focus on the individual lives behind America’s military service. “While we often honor service members collectively, each one has a name, a family, and a story,” says Karen Worcester, executive director, WAA. “Their sacrifices are deeply personal, and their stories shape the freedoms we enjoy today.”
Wreaths Across America - Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery (WAA-ALNC) is looking for local individuals to share stories of those who wore or are still wearing our nation's uniform. These stories will be shared throughout 2026 via social media and email with those who are part of the WAA-ALNC Volunteers and Sponsors email list.
Tips on telling a Remember Me story:
- Submissions from anyone of any age are welcome - This would be a wonderful service project or writing project for students of any age. Coloring pages from younger students are also welcome!
- Who to remember/recognize? Have a conversation with a Veteran or current Service Member - Family member, neighbor, local VFW/American Legion member, or someone you look up to who has served or is serving.
- Choose someone laid to rest at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery Complex, do a little research into their service, and write about it.
- Did you know there are several individuals of note laid to rest at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery (ALNC)? Among them are: George Theodore Hyatt (Medal of Honor recipient, Civil War), Michael Galajdik (perished at Pearl Harbor on the USS Oklahoma; his remains went unidentified for decades), Iceal "Gene" Hambleton (shot down behind enemy lines in 1972, his rescue was the longest and most complex of the Vietnam War, immortalized in print and film as Bat 21).
- If the written word isn't your thing, tell their story in photos. A podcast style interview or a video submission is also welcome!
